Over the years, explorers have reported bizarre and unsettling finds. Underground cinemas, hidden bars, sculptures carved directly into stone walls, and rooms filled with relics from decades past have all been discovered deep within the catacombs.

One of the most famous stories involves a fully equipped cinema found by authorities, complete with a projection system and seating—mysteriously abandoned without explanation.

Getting Lost Underground

The greatest danger of the off-limit catacombs is disorientation. With countless intersecting tunnels and no reliable maps, it’s easy to become lost. There have been cases of people wandering for days before finding their way out—or needing rescue.

The darkness is absolute, the silence overwhelming, and the sense of isolation profound.

Entering unauthorized sections of the Catacombs is illegal and can result in fines or arrest.

Why They Remain Off-Limits

Authorities strictly control access to protect both the fragile underground structures and the safety of individuals. The tunnels are unstable in places, and the risk of injury—or worse—is very real.

Additionally, preserving the historical and cultural significance of the catacombs is a priority, preventing vandalism and uncontrolled exploration.
