Introduction

Nestled in the hills near Fethiye, the abandoned village of Kayaköy stands as one of Turkey’s most haunting and atmospheric destinations. Kayaköy was originally known as Levissi and was home to thousands of Greek Orthodox Christians during the Ottoman Empire. The town flourished with schools, churches, and tightly packed homes climbing the hillside.

However, everything changed after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923. The Greek residents were forced to leave, and Muslims relocated from Greece struggled to adapt to the unfamiliar environment. Eventually, the town was abandoned entirely.

Today, over 500 roofless houses remain, forming a vast open-air museum of silence and memory.

Walking through Kayaköy feels like stepping into another world. Narrow stone paths wind between crumbling homes, many still showing traces of daily life — staircases leading nowhere, doorways opening into the sky, and walls marked by time.
